Create A New Report

Follow these instructions if you haven't be shared a report to duplicate

  1. At this point check again that you are in the correct account and property and then select the plus icon named BLANK - create a new exploration.

The next screen has two columns on the left that you populate with what you want to measure and the main screen is the report that you create.

  1. Make sure at the top of the second column that the Technique is set to Free Form and the Visualization is set to Table.
  2. Click below the Exploration Name at the top of the first column and give the exploration a name e.g. File Downloads Report

The Segment is the main piece of data that you want the report to focus on - in this case the event file_downloads. Remember that this is automatically recorded by GA4. We are just telling the report to focus only on the file_download event by creating a segment.

  1. Click the + to the right of the SEGMENT title. This will open the following screen:
Check Tab Settings, Name, then add Segment
  1. Click "Event Segment"
click
  1. Give the segment a name - click on "Untitled Segment" and name it File_downloads
  2. Click on "Add new condition".
Name then Add New Condition
  1. Click "Events"
  2. Scroll down the right column and click "file_download"
  3. Then click "SAVE AND APPLY"
click Events then file_download then Save and Apply

You now need to create the Dimensions you will be using in the report. This simply adds different elements that you will be measuring in your report.

  1. Click the '+' to the right of DIMENSIONS.
click + to add a new Dimension
  1. Expand the General tab and select "File extension".
  2. Expand the Link tab and select "Link URL".
  3. Then click IMPORT in the top right corner.

The new dimensions should now appear in the first column under DIMENSIONS.

Expand General and select 'file extension - select Link' then 'link URL' then Import

The last element is to add Metrics. This is what the report is actually counting - in this case the number of times the event file_download occurs.

  1. Click the '+' to the right of METRICS
Add a new Metric
  1. Expand the Event tab and select Event Count
  2. click Import in the top right corner of the page.

This will take you back to the main exploration creation page and Event count should appear under your METRICS.

expand Event then select 'Event Count' then IMPORT

The rest of the report is created by dragging the various SEGMENT, DIMENSIONS and METRIC into the relevant section of the second column.

PLEASE NOTE: The second column is longer than the usual screen view so will need to be scrolled through to complete the report.

Drag the following across from the first column to the following fields in the second column:

  1. Drag your "File Downloads" SEGMENT across to the SEGMENT COMPARISONS (if it isn't already)
  2. Drag your "Link URL" DIMENSION across to the ROWS
  3. Scroll down a bit and then drag your "File extension" DIMENSION to COLUMNS
  4. Drag your "Event count" METRIC to VALUES
eDrag Segments, Dimensions, and Metrics to right column

You should now have results in your report. A few things to note:
